By Rubén Morales Iglesias: San Ignacio-Santa Elena Town Mayor Earl Trapp said the receding of the Macal River which flooded the San Ignacio Welcome Center, the San Ignacio Market and the Norman Broaster Stadium on Monday, may take longer than a day or two if rains in Peten, Guatemala continue.

“These things will happen from time to time, and we cannot control the large volume of water coming down. You know with climate change, it’s unpredictable how the weather will come,” said Mayor Trapp.

“We have to monitor it. It’s unpredictable because I understand it’s raining in Flores, Peten, and that area,” he added.

“These things will happen from time to time, and we cannot control the large volume of water coming down. You know with climate change, it’s unpredictable how the weather will come.”

“NEMO (National Emergency Organization) spoke to some personnel in that area and they are saying that it’s raining. So, we are anticipating that those rains will affect the Mopan River which in turn will cause backwater on the Macal River. If that happens the receding will take much, much longer.”

Trapp said that if we don’t get rains from Guatemala it takes a couple of days for the water to recede.

In fact, he said he was surprised that water level rose so rapidly on Monday since the waters were coming from the south.

As to the dams’ spillage, he said he wasn’t too concerned.

“It is spilling, but they advised us that it is nothing to worry about, but it is spilling over, yes.”
