By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Though he can’t quantify the losses suffered by the San Ignacio-Santa Elena Town Council, businesses, and residents of the twin-town due to the present flood of the Macal River, Mayor Earl Trapp said the losses are considerable.

“It has affected us considerably taking into consideration that the businesses had to be closed yesterday, the market vendors had to be relocated to Falcon Field, and the inconvenience of everyone having to remove their goods from their stores downtown,” said Mayor Earl Trapp.

But Mayor Trapp said downtown is not the only area affected in the hilly twin-town.

“Other areas of the town were affected by flooding as well,” Mayor Trapp said.

“Our drains couldn’t handle the large volume of water that came down. The improper disposal of garbage is another factor. Garbage from the yards flows into the drains and because of the amount of water coming down, it clogs up the culverts and water begins to overflow. So, this adds up to the flood situation.”

Mayor Trapp said he had to call NEMO to assist a person in the Cahal Pech area who called him to ask for help because his house was collapsing because of the torrential rains.

“We had flooding in different areas of San Ignacio and Santa Elena. We had some crews out there working yesterday and we dispatched them again this morning to clear out the culvert heads and see what all we can do.”

“These things will happen from time to time, and we cannot control the large volume of water coming down. You know with climate change, it’s unpredictable how the weather will come.”

Trapp said that on Tuesday and Wednesday they would continue cleaning the market area.
