By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As water level recedes, the San Ignacio-Santa Elena work crews assisted by the Fire Department, was on Tuesday morning cleaning up the San Ignacio Welcome Center, but the process was slowed down because water still remains in the area, said Mayor Earl Trapp.

Water spilled over the banks of the Macal River on Monday and rose as far as the back of Bismillah’s Store past the San Ignacio-Santa Elena Welcome Center, even flooding the Norman Broaster Stadium, and forcing the San Ignacio Market vendor and business owners in the area to move out their goods and close shop.

On Tuesday morning, the Town Council started the clean-up process around the Welcome Center with water hoses from the Fire Department but couldn’t do the area by the San Ignacio market as it still had water.

“We have our truck and our workmen, cleaning downtown, right now, but it’s a portion of downtown, more like the Welcome Center where the water has receded,” Mayor Trap said on Tuesday morning.

“It’s still on Savannah between Broaster Stadium and the market. You can walk through the water. You cannot wash that until it’s gone completely. So, we’re washing the Welcome Center.”

Mayor Trapp said it will take a while, maybe a couple of days, for the water to go back to normal, that is, below the low-lying bridge which unites San Ignacio and Santa Elena.
