By Aaron Humes: Without calling them by name, the United Democratic Party’s National Organization for Women (UDP NOW) has appealed to those caught on a video circulated on Monday to seek help for issues attributed to domestic violence.
The video is widely believed to be of a confrontation between Collet area representative and former party leader Patrick Faber and a woman who will not be identified, yet the NOW gingerly refers to him as “an elected official who many of our young people look up to.” Faber is on the outs with the party for unrelated defiance of a party directive to remove anti-leadership social media posts.
NOW points out that the confrontation was allegedly witnessed by a child and that Faber has been accused of such activity for the second time – the previous allegation was withdrawn at the courts.
“This is unacceptable. While the matter is between two individuals, domestic violence is everyone’s concern,” the statement says, before going on to deplore social media commentary that it says “further victimizes the victim and enables abusers” and repeats that domestic abuse is not acceptable in any circumstance. In fact, it reminds, it is a crime – one that no one should be subjected to.
This is the first public commentary from any arm of the party since the story broke; however, vice-chairman Alberto August has said publicly that in his view Faber was defending himself, not aggressing the other person involved.
