By Aaron Humes: One young man, Jorge Roberto Vargas, 21, a student of Chula Vista Area, Corozal Town, is dead, and twelve other persons are injured to varying degrees after a traffic collision on the Philip Goldson Highway late Tuesday afternoon.
In Ranchito Village, Corozal District, between miles 82 and 83, around 4:10 p.m., the Toyota Land Cruiser ambulance belonging to the Ministry of Health tried to overtake a truck. It was being driven at the time by Louis Canelo, employed as an official ambulance driver. He was transporting a female minor, Alejandra Patt, in the care of her mother en route to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, attended by nurses Misael Loria and Victoria Mesh.
As the ambulance tried overtaking, a Toyota minivan being driven by Carmelo Kau, a taxi driver of Corozal District, travelling in the opposite direction, collided head-on with the ambulance causing extensive injuries to Vargas, who later died.
Other injured passengers have been identified as Aaliyah Marokin, 20, of Diego Street, Corozal Town; Armando Patt, Anthony Tzib, Grisel Mesh, Dianira Maradiaga and Jaheem Williams, all students of the Corozal area. The driver of the minivan Carmelo Kau injured both knees and received cuts to the right chest and left side of his forehead.
Canelo received a swollen right ankle and complained of pain in his chest area. Nurse Victoria Mesh received a cut to the center of her forehead and a cut to the lower lip and complained of pain in her right shoulder. Nurse Misael Loria received abrasions to the left cheek, and left side of the head and complained of pain to the left side of the rib cage. The extent of injuries to Patt along with her mother are unknown at this time.
Police have the matter under investigation.
