Belize’s top two football clubs, Verdes and Altitude, clash Wednesday night in Belmopan

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Verdes are the champs but at the moment find themselves chasing Altitude for the top spot in the Premier League of Belize (PLB). With 21 points and one game in hand, Altitude have the upper hand right now but tonight they meet in a backmatch at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan, a pitch Verdes now very well, and with friendly fans to back them up.

To get their fans out, Verdes are offering free bus transport for fans tonight. The bus leaves Benque Viejo del Carmen at 6:00 pm and San Ignacio at 6:30 pm and returns at 10:00 pm.

Two points short of Altitude, Verdes are hoping to turn things around tonight. But even if they do, Altitude have the yet-unplayed game against San Pedro Pirates that can keep them ahead of the champs.

Should Altitude prevail when both meet tonight, however, the banana men will have amplified their lead by five. A draw would give them a three-point edge.

To top it off, there’s the goalscoring race with Altitude’s Colombia Andrés Orozco leading Verdes’ Paraguayan Luis Ibarra 7 to 6.

Makes for a big match tonight.

Kick-off time is 8:00 pm in the capital.
