By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Wagiya-Port Layola backmatch won’t play tonight in Dangriga as the Carla Ramos Stadium lights are not bright enough, said the Premier League of Belize.

“Apart from not being bright enough, they are not properly spaced,” said PLB Manager Wilhelm Miguel explaining the finding of the Referees Department which inspected the lights on Tuesday night.

“Some areas may have had clear light and some areas may not have had enough light. It’s something that they would have to balance and probably add on additional lighting. They are working on it. I know the National Sports Council has said that they should be working on it but I’m not sure when that will be completed.”

Miguel said the referees used a photo meter to measure the brightness of the light while also physically inspecting the different areas of the pitch at the southern stadium.

Wagiya were hoping to play their outstanding game against Port Layola there on Wednesday night but have now opted to play the match next week Thursday at the Michael Ashcroft in Independence. Should the game not be able to be played then because of rain, the PLB will reschedule it for Belmopan the following week.

“We have not had night games at the Carl Ramos for quite a while because of the lighting,” said Miguel. “And while Mr Nelson Moss (Wagiya manager) had said the National Sports Council had done some improvement, but when we checked it yesterday with the referees and the criteria that was supposed to be met, at least minimum for it to be approved, it did not pass that, so we could not approve the game to be played there.”

The game had originally been slated to play on Sunday at 4:00 pm but the incessant rains over the weekend caused all PLB games to be postponed.
