Retired police officer hit to the face with a beer bottle outside a bar; attackers granted bail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A retired police officer is recovering after he was assaulted outside of Five Brothers Bar in Belize City, while his attackers are out on bail.

On Wednesday, 26-year-old Tariq Phillips, and 22-year-old Miguel Angel Alvarez, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, Phillips for common assault and Alvarez for grievous harm.

Both men pleaded not guilty to their charges and were granted bail, which they met.

Allegations are that on Sunday, October 9, Philips got into an altercation with 56-year-old Santiago Ciau Sr. outside of the bar and pushed him in his chest several times. During this altercation, Alvarez allegedly took a beer bottle and hit Ciau to the mouth with it, causing him to bleed profusely.

The men are due back in court on December 13.
