By Breaking Belize News Staff: Convicted child rapist, 41-year-old Fitz Harris Howard has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Howard appeared in the Supreme Court today for his sentencing hearing before Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft.
His sentence takes effect from June 8, 2022, leaving him with 24 years and 8 months left to serve. Howard will become eligible for parole after serving 15 years.
Howard’s attorney, Oscar Selgado, had asked the court to consider the minimum sentence of 12 years; however, the Judge said after careful consideration and noting that even after conviction Howard did not show any remorse, that the 25-year sentence was appropriate, given the damage done to the minor, who was 15 years old at the time.
The incident took place on January 9, 2018. Howard was accused of picking the victim up in his vehicle on Central American Boulevard under the guise that he was giving her a ride home. He reportedly told the minor that he just needed to drop something off first, then took her to a secluded area and raped her.
Howard was convicted on June 8, 2022. He maintains that he is innocent of the crime and that he was not properly represented in court.
