Flood waters receding in the West, but communities in central Belize must prepare for MAJOR flooding, NEMO says

Posted: Thursday, October 13, 2022. 7:57 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) says that the flood waters at the Mopan River that passes Benque Viejo, Succotz, Calla Creek, Bullet Tree Falls, and Paslow Falls are slowly receding.

The flood waters are also receding in Blackman Eddy, Roaring River, La Rivera area and More Tomorrow.

However, communities along the Sibun and Belize rivers are experiencing flood conditions.

Flooding is being reported in the Belize River Valley as the flood waters enters the Belize District.

NEMO says that this may continue for the next 3 to 4 days or longer.

NEMO urges residents in these areas to prepare for a possible major flood event.

The public is advised to take the necessary actions to save lives.

“Avoid walking, playing and driving through floodwaters. If your home is likely to flood, before leaving, secure your home, unplug appliances, turn off electricity, gas and main water valve, secure your documents and your pet. Check on the elderly and people with disabilities. If you need to seek shelter, move early; do not wait until it is too late,” NEMO urges.

Farmers in the Belize River Valley and Crooked Tree areas are advised to move livestock and crops to a safe place.

Residents are also advised to secure and move their belongings, livestock and pets to higher grounds and evacuate early.
