Friends for Conservation and Development installs solar electric fence for farmers in Vaca Forest Reserve

Posted: Thursday, October 13, 2022. 11:41 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) said today on a social media post that cattle ranching activity on the periphery of the Vaca Forest Reserve continues and about 2 farmers have extended their pasture lands inside the reserve.

FCD noted that the reserve prohibits cattle ranching, therefore, the idea has been to contain these from advancing into the protected area.

“With this in mind, an electric fence system using solar panels to generate energy was instituted by the Extension Technician for the two farmers. The use of solar electric fences will, in addition, reduce the need for farmers to cut trees for fence posts,” FCD stated.

FCD said that this climate-smart practice will ultimately increase the efficiency of land use and provide an opportunity for farmers to implement a proper grazing system for cattle while reducing the need to deforest areas for pasture expansion.
