Judiciary, Constitutional reform to be debated at rescheduled House meeting

Posted: Thursday, October 13, 2022. 8:31 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The National Assembly informed on Wednesday afternoon that Friday’s scheduled meeting of the House of Representatives in Belmopan would be postponed to Monday morning, October 17, at 10 a.m.

The official Orders of the Day can be found on the National Assembly website. Among the bills listed for debate (i.e. second reading) are the Senior Courts Bill, 2022; Belize Constitution (Twelfth Amendment) Bill, 2022; Patents (Amendment) Bill, 2022; Non-Governmental Organizations (Amendment) Bill, 2022; The People’s Constitution Commission Bill, 2022.

The first two bills were read together when first introduced and complement each other. The former proposes to repeal and replace the Supreme Court of Judicature Act and the Court of Appeal Act and to provide for new positions within the judiciary to assist in the functioning and administration of the renamed Senior Courts, while the latter proposes to amend the Belize Constitution to establish the Senior Courts of Belize.

The other major bill up for debate is the People’s Constitution Commission which will establish that named body to draft and guide the process of promulgating a new Constitution for Belize or amendments to the Belize Constitution. Several of its members have been publicly announced.

One new bill is listed for introduction, an amendment to the Customs and Excise Act.

Other business on the agenda will include the usual questions to Ministers and statements by Ministers among other items.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) will of course have coverage of the day’s proceedings throughout Monday.
