By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Five people were killed and 2 more injured in a mass shooting in North Carolina last night, BBC reports.

Authorities have detained a 15-year-old suspect. The suspect was hospitalized and listed in critical condition after his arrest.

The incident occurred just after 5 pm on Thursday in a neighborhood near the Neuse River Greenway.

Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said the investigation is ongoing.

“My heart is heavy because we don’t have answers as to why this tragedy occurred,” Chief Patterson said.

According to authorities, the shooting spree spanned over 2 miles.

The suspect fired shots at victims in the streets of the residential neighborhood before he fled to the Greenway trail where more victims were shot.

The suspect managed to elude officers for hours until he was cornered in a home and arrested.

There have been increased reports of gun violence and mass shootings in the U.S.

Data from the Gun Violence Archive indicate that there have been 540 reported mass shootings across the United States in 2022.
