By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Representatives from the Belize Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) and the Belize Agriculture Health Authority (BAHA) made presentations at the eighth Meeting of the Fruit Fly Commission, which also involves the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala, in Mexico City.

The representatives of the four countries at the Multilateral Commissioners Meeting reviewed the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) work plans and discussed the progress of the Regional Medfly Program. They also considered ways for improved collaboration.

Doctor Victoriano Pascual, MAFSE’s Chief Agriculture Officer, along with the other countries’ commissioners, presented an overview of the Belize program, and made closing remarks at the end of the meeting.

Edvin Guzman, Belize’s Medfly Coordinator, then made a presentation on the status of the Medfly Program in Belize.

The Mediterranean Fruit Fly is considered one of the most destructive pests of fruits and vegetables. Belize was declared free of the Medfly in 2001 after a radical eradication program implemented in 1989, with assistance from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The multilateral Fruit Fly Commission was established by the governments of the United States, Mexico, and Guatemala in 2015 to “coordinate efforts relating to the prevention, detection, suppression and eradication of the Medfly and other economically important fruit flies”.

The meeting reviewed the financial situation of the Regional Medfly Program, looked at corrective action plans and the outreach and interagency initiatives, and presented the five-year regional work plan.

At the end the representatives signed resolutions and the 2023 technical and financial work plans.

Belize was also represented by Zoe Zetina, BAHA Managing Director, and Francisco Gutierrez, Director of the Plant Health Department.
