Ministry of Agriculture outlines requirements for farmers to qualify for the Mexico-funded Sembrando Vida project

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) outlined the requirements for farmers to qualify to receive assistance from the Sembrando Vida Project funded by the government of Mexico and carried out in collaboration with MAFSE). Sembrando Vida is expected to benefit 2,000 Belizean Farmers over the next three years.

MAFSE said the Sembrando Vida project “aims to improve the quality of life of the rural population with the generation of employment through the provision of supplies, technical and economic support that encourages agriculture production for self-consumption of food and the sale of surpluses”.

According to Emilio Rene Montero, National Food and Nutrition Security Commission (NFNSC) coordinator, the Sembrando Vida project that is being run by the Mexican International Agency for Cooperation and Development (Amexcid) is being implemented to assist small farmers that have within 0.5 of an acre to 5 acres of land under cultivation.

“These farmers will be getting an economic incentive for four months with agricultural inputs like fertilizer, seeds, irrigation systems, and eight months of training, ” said Montero.

“They have to be 18 years and older, they have to be registered farmers in the BAIMS system, that’s the Belize Agriculture Information Management System, and they have to be Belizean.”

MAFSE said the farmers must reside in rural areas of any of Belize’s six districts. They have to provide proof of that residency by presenting a utility bill of at least three months.

They also have to provide proof of ownership, lease, or rent.

Additionally, they have to “agree to comply with all legal provisions that will be in the guidelines for the operation of the project”.
