Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, dies at 72

By Benjamin Flowers: The UK Daily Mail reports that Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane, known for his iconic role as Hogwarts groundskeeper Hagrid in the Harry Potter movies, died today.

Coltrane’s agent Belinda Wright announced his death today, asking that fans be respectful of his family’s grief at this time. Coltrane, whose real name was Anthony Robert McMillan. was 72 years old.

Reports are that he had been struggling with health issues since earlier this year, He had notably withdrew from the London Comic Con for health reasons.

Coltrane was a decorated actor, winning the Best Actor BAFTA three years in a row for his role as criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald in the ITV drama series Cracker. He was also awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2006 for services to drama.

In light of his passing, condolences have begun pouring in from actors, friends, and even Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
