International News: Two Chinas spar at start of PRC Communist Party Congress; Taiwan objects to PRC denial of territorial integrity

By Aaron Humes: Reuters reports that the Republic of China, Taiwan (ROC) has reacted to claims that the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is “determined and able to oppose territorial integrity,” according to President and Communist Party Chairman Xi Jinping at the start of the party congress in Beijing, held once every five years.

Taiwan will not back down on its sovereignty or compromise on freedom and democracy, and its people clearly oppose Beijing’s idea of “one country, two systems” management for Taiwan, the self-ruled island’s presidential office said in a statement issued shortly thereafter.

In Xi’s address to the Congress, he claimed China has achieved comprehensive control over Hong Kong, turning it from chaos to governance, and has waged a major struggle against Taiwan separatism.

He added that it is up to the Chinese people to resolve the Taiwan issue and that China will never renounce the use of force over Taiwan.

Taiwan’s presidential office hit back in their statement, saying that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region is the common responsibility of both sides and meeting on the battlefield is not an option.
