By Rubén Morales Iglesias: National football champions Verdes managed to come off the island with a last gap 2-2 draw against the San Pedro Pirates in their Saturday night visit to Ambergris Stadium.
The ways things were going with Verdes down 2-0 up to the 71st minute, it looked like the Green Machine were headed for their second loss this season. But banking on their champions nature, the Green Machine were able to avert the loss and salvaged a draw that keeps them in second place behind Altitude.
Mario Chimal scored in the seventh minute showing Verdes that the Pirates meant business to be the order of the day.
Horace Avila, who’s been on fire lately for San Pedro, made his presence felt in the 57th minute for the islanders to take a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The draw maintained the status quo in the PLB with both teams tied in points, though now at 21. However, Verdes have the edge on goal differential and are in second place while San Pedro are in third. Both trail Altitude by four points.
