Woman injured after brakes failure causes bus crash at Belmopan terminal; Minister plans inspection station

Posted: Sunday, October 16, 2022. 11:02 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: A woman identified as Kimara Montes was injured on Saturday evening after a bus apparently lost control entering the Belmopan Terminal and crushed a desk in the boarding area.

Minister of Transport Rodwell Ferguson gave thanks that she survived and continued on to make his point on social media that greater regulation of the bus industry is needed.

“As we are cracking down, the operators might feel we are against them. This is the eventuality. That’s why we will implement an inspection station and other measures at the Department of Transport, brakes failure almost cost a life,” he wrote.

The Ministry and Department of Transport have been facing some resistance from operators to modernize buses and ensure that the long-standing “Bluebird” buses are taken off the road. Ferguson has promised that in the coming year there will be greater enforcement and better service on the roads with support from the banks and the Ministry, even as higher prices for transport-related equipment and fuel forced bus transport prices up earlier this year.
