Woman who took her friends on shopping spree with stolen credit card remanded to prison

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City woman is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after going on a shopping spree with a stolen credit card.

Twenty-five-year-old Shareny Baltazar appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, jointly charged with three other women for credit card theft.

In court, Baltazar pleaded guilty with an explanation, saying that she was on her way home on a passenger bus when she found the card. The Magistrate asked Baltazar if she realized what she was pleading guilty to and that the offense carries prison time as well as a hefty fine, but she maintained her guilty plea.

With that, the prosecution withdrew the charge from the other three women and she was remanded until her sentencing hearing which is set for Wednesday, October 19.

The card owner reported to police that she received a Belize Bank notification that her card was being used at several stores in Belize City, including Chon Saan Palace, J&W Shopping Mart, and Naybaz Store.

Police went to each location and managed to obtain surveillance footage identifying Baltazar and the other accused as the ones using the card. When police approached the group of women they threw a bag which was later found to contain liquor purchased with the stolen card.
