By Aaron Humes: The People’s Constitutional Commission (PCC) is on track to be formally established following passage of the enabling legislation today in the House of Representatives.
Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow in signaling his support said that the historic process is intended to “protect and expand rights” rather than remove them. He added that after meeting Chairman Anthony Chanona he was satisfied that the Commission would be neutral and open to hearing from everyone.
Prime Minister John Briceño suggested he was not inclined to add any more individuals to the 25-member Commission, noting that not being a member does not lessen one’s ability to contribute to the debate.
Other speakers such as Minister of Education Francis Fonseca lauded the historic occasion and the ability Belizeans will have to determine their future, to govern themselves rather than be governed by anyone in the words of Minister for Political Reform Henry Charles Usher.
