By Aaron Humes: In the words of Prime Minister John Briceño, “Everybody wants relief on [fuel prices], myself included.”
But will it come any time soon? Not quite, as he told reporters today.
According to the Prime Minister, there has been a recent slight reduction in pump prices – not much to speak of as it wasn’t even announced – and the Government is consulting on further reductions.
But the Government still needs to recoup revenue lost with the installation of transport subsidies earlier this year, which will expire at the end of the year.
And compared for instance to the United States, Belize buys far less fuel, so prices are not as favorable.
With cuts to fuel taxes, he reminded, prices are stable, if higher than most of our regional counterparts.
