International News: U.S. and Canada send armored vehicles to assist police in Haiti

Posted: Monday, October 17, 2022. 9:36 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Gang violence continues to raze through Haiti and the authorities need all the help they can get.

The United States and Canada have reportedly sent armored vehicles and other supplies to assist the Haitian police, Latin Post reports.

According to the U.S. State Department, the new equipment was bought by the Haitian Government. But, reports indicate that the supplies were flown on military aircraft to Port-au-Prince.

A U.S. military’s Southern Command said that it was a joint operation with Canada, specifically between the U.S. Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force.

“This equipment will assist (Haiti’s National Police) in their fight against criminal actors who are fomenting violence and disrupting the flow of critically-needed humanitarian assistance, hindering efforts to halt the spread of cholera,” the Department of State noted.

The delivery comes amidst the continuous gang violence and a cholera outbreak.

There are over 500 suspected cholera cases with 35 reported deaths.

“It should be noted that this outbreak occurs in a context of a complex humanitarian and security crisis in Port-au-Prince and neighboring cities, where access to health services and, therefore, epidemiological surveillance could be affected,” the Pan American Health Organization stated.
