By Aaron Humes: This afternoon Prime Minister John Briceño told reporters that the Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) and the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) have agreed to jointly appoint an independent mediator to settle their Commercial Agreement dispute with six weeks to go to the start of the sugar cane season.
Briceño said an expert in the industry would be looked for to intervene, paid for by both sides.
While there remains separation on the level of revenue the millers want to surrender to the producers, it has agreed that BSCFA inspects the books to justify production costs – something the Association has wanted for years.
The Prime Minister repeated his hope and insistence that the two sides come to an agreement because they are both needed in an industry that is once again seeing better days after the body blows of the COVID pandemic and internal divisions.
