By Benjamin Flowers: The Eastern Division of the Belize Police Department supported students with special needs at Excelsior High School over the weekend by constructing wheelchair ramps to make areas of the school more accessible.
The initiative was spearheaded by Officer Commanding Eastern Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Howell Gillett.
Gillett told Breaking Belize News (BBN) that the materials were sponsored by a private sector partner, Rosado’s Hardware, and police officers provided the labor, under the supervision of a contractor.
“This will aid the kids who have to be assisted by other students to get around the different classrooms and bathrooms,” Gillett said.
He added that supporting education and fostering a deeper relationship between police and the community has been one of the cornerstones of his leadership and that several other initiatives are being planned and executed.
Earlier this month, Gillett in collaboration with Holy Redeemer Credit Union, Mirab, and Premier Charters and Tours, opened junior savers accounts at the HRCU for 30 southside children.
