Progresso down Port Layola 1-0, move up to PLB playoff position

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Progresso managed a very slim 1-0 win over Port Layola in the last match played over the weekend in the Premier League of Belize (PLB) at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk moving up to a playoff spot.

Marlon Gutierrez scored the lone goal for the northern club in the 64th minute on an assist by Leocadio ‘Peely’ Briceño on Sunday evening.

With the win, Progresso have 15 points leapfrogging over Wagiya who remained at 14 after losing 2-1 to Altitude on Saturday. Now in fourth place, Progresso are in a playoff position with three games left.

“This Sunday Marlon gave the team a relief as he scored the only goal that pushed us back to playoffs position,” said Progresso FC in a social media post. “Now it is up to us to keep winning to maintain that position.”

The loss keeps Port Layola in seventh position with 10 points, now just two more than the Belmopan Bandits that edged Benque Viejo United 3-2 on Saturday.

San Pedro and Verdes played to a 2-2 draw in the other Saturday match at Ambergris Stadium.
