Roberto Arana still in critical condition after chopping as three suspects held – suspected MS-13 involvement

Posted: Monday, October 17, 2022. 2:29 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Roberto Arana remains in critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, having potentially lost two fingers in addition to other bodily injuries after he was chopped by a pair of Hispanic men believed to be gang members in Scotland Halfmoon, Belize District.

Police investigators say that Arana and the men got into an argument that led to the chopping: “Mr Arana was involved in an argument with one of these assailants and when it escalated they [went] for their machetes. I must also say that these persons are from Belize City, believed to be members of the MS-13 [Mara Salvatrucha] gang, and these persons made good their escape [but] one of them was captured not too long after the incident, about ten minutes and the others were captured in Belize City in the Krooman Lagoon area,” said Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood. He said that a reported incident in the area was related to the capture.

Police had reportedly retrieved the fingers but it is not clear whether they can be re-attached.
