By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating the death of Verris Ventura, a Reggae Street, Belize City resident, following an altercation on the Burrell Boom Road on Sunday night.
According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Fitzroy Yearwood, there had been an altercation between Ventura and a Coast Guard officer at the site of a dance in Burrell Boom, following which the officer and his two passengers left.
About a mile away, Ventura apparently caught up with the group in his own vehicle and allegedly opened fire, to which the officer responded with his own licensed weapon.
All four involved, including a young woman in the officer’s vehicle who hails from Double Head Cabbage, Belize District, were taken for treatment to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Ventura died around 1 a.m. while undergoing treatment, while the young woman remains in critical condition.
Because of the circumstances surrounding the incident, ASP Yearwood said, the Police investigators would take guidance from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Ventura was notably previously accused of being a member of a gang.
