By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Benque Viejo United-Progresso backmatch is on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen.
The match was one of three Premier League of Belize (PLB) games that were postponed two weekends ago due to incessant rains and water-laden pitches. Two games were played last week but Benque had to delay their match until this week since the Marshalleck’s pitch was still soggy last Wednesday and Thursday. The PLB considered it was best to leave it for this week.
According to PLB General Manager Wilhelm Miguel, the Marshalleck, like the majority of the fields in the country, was not designed with proper drainage, so it takes a long time to dry.
A 1-0 win over Port Layola landed Progresso in fourth place with 15 points. If they can maintain the spot, Progresso would earn a berth in the PLB playoffs. It’s not a spot they want to relinquish right away, so they are travelling to Benque with that in mind. But with three games to play, Benque United, who are in sixth place with 11 points, are also gunning for a playoff spot. Mathematics are not on their side, but you never say die as long as there is hope.
