By Aaron Humes, Guinea Grass, Orange Walk: For the average Belizean living south of Orange Walk Town, sugar cane is sugar cane – most can’t tell their B79 from their B52.
But those in the know say the differences between them may be critical to the future of the industry.
After twelve years and five phases of development in BSI’s research plots and cooperation with farmers, BSI/ASR has released an official Sugar Cane Farmers Guide to the Barbados-Belize (Bbz) varieties, a total of eleven, released today.
Whether high productivity, resilience to climate change, sustainable or high quality, each variety has been tested and retested and the result will benefit farmers.
