Four hydrological stations installed along New River to improve data collection

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Department of the Environment (DOE) within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management and the National Hydrological Service (NHS) of the Ministry of Natural Resources are beneficiaries of the Regional Project entitled: “Integrated Ridge to Reef Management of the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion (MAR2R)”.

The DOE says that in alignment with the collaborative works being done for the restoration of the New River and the NHS Strategic Plan, 4 additional hydrological stations have been installed along the New River to improve data collection coverage of the entire New River system.

An official ceremony for the commissioning of the hydrological stations will be held on October 20, 2022, at 3:00 pm at Tower Hill, Orange Walk District.

“Each site is equipped with an automated station that is used to obtain information such as water level and corresponding flow rate which are used for many hydraulic and hydrological studies including flood and drought forecasting, infrastructure design, climate, and environmental impact studies, and other water management concerns,” the DOE noted.

The DOE says that the stations will be incorporated into the NHS network of stations and will be used as data collection points and serve as part of the Flood Early Warning System.

“The information that is obtained from these stations will help government agencies to better understand the New River ecosystem and will contribute to better decision making in the current restoration program of the New River,” the department further noted.

The public is urged to not tamper with these stations and is reminded that it is a criminal offense to interfere with these stations.
