International News: Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema wins Ballon d’Or

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: French striker Karim Benzema won the men’s Ballon d’Or over Sadio Mane, Kevin De Bruyne and Robert Lewandowski in that order. Benzema is just the second player who is not Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the coveted prize in the last 15 years. His teammate Luca Modric won the title in 2018.

The Real Madrid striker led his team to the La Liga and Champions League championship last season while scoring all of 44 goals in 46 matches.

Spain and Barcelona player Alexia Putellas won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the second time consecutively. She became the only woman to have won the title for a second time. England and Arsenal forward Beth Mead as second ahead of Australia and Chelsea striker Sam Kerr.

Spain and Barcelona midfielder Gavi won the Kopa Trophy for best young player while Belgium and Real Madrid Thibault Courtois won the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper.

In the men’s ranking from 5^th to 10^th in order are Salah, Mbappe, Courtois, Vinicius Jr, Modric, and Haaland.
