By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The United Nations (UN) is warning that Haiti is reaching a “breaking point” and its residents face economic and food crises, BBC reports.
Almost 20,000 people in Cité Soleil have dangerously little access to food and could face starvation, the UN says.
In addition, 5 million people in Haiti are struggling with malnutrition.
“Haiti is facing a humanitarian catastrophe,” a top UN official said.
“The severity and the extent of food insecurity in Haiti are getting worse,” Jean-Martin Bauer, the Haiti country director for the UN’s World Food Programme stated.
Haiti is experiencing severe political, economic, health and security crises with increased acts of violence.
Gangs have blocked Haiti’s main fuel terminal, crippling its basic water and food supplies.
The UN noted that in Cité Soleil, levels of food insecurity had reached the highest level on its classification system – Phase 5 – meaning residents have dangerously little access to food and could be facing starvation.
UN officials said that 100,000 children under the age of 5 were severely malnourished and are especially vulnerable to cholera.
