Opposition airs public complaints about lack of health care supplies in public service

Posted: Tuesday, October 18, 2022. 10:34 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: From AIDS to Zika, the public health system is in crisis and risking lives to satisfy demand, according to the United Democratic Party.

In a statement, the Opposition says “novices” receiving contracts for obtaining and distributing pharmaceutical products and supplies have led to reduced standards for importation and failure to deliver supplies with quality and on time.

As a result, it says, public facilities often don’t even have the basics of modern medication – Tylenol, ibuprofen, vitamins and antibiotics – not to mention specialized drugs for patients with HIV/AIDS, hypertension and diabetes, leading to “clinic searching.”

More of the burden of treating patients – and the cost – is falling on the private sector as public practitioners have had to “get creative” to treat their charges.

The UDP call on Minister of Health Kevin Bernard to follow up and fix the current state of affairs.
