International News: U.S. fighter jets intercept 2 Russian bombers flying near Alaska

Posted: Wednesday, October 19, 2022. 10:47 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, the U.S. Air Force dispatched 2 F-16 fighter jets to intercept a pair of Russian bombers that flew near Alaska, Yahoo reports.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) said that the 2 Russian Tu-95 Bear-H bombers did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace but it was detected, tracked, identified, and intercepted.

The bombers were “entering and operating within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone,” NORAD noted.

NORAD which is the combined air defense organization of the U.S. and Canada noted that the Russian activity was “not seen as a threat nor is the activity seen as provocative.”

However, the interception of the Russian bombers comes at a time of heightened tensions as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continues.

The U.S. has supported Ukraine with humanitarian and military aid while slamming Moscow with economic sanctions.

“We remain ready to employ a number of response options in defense of North America and Arctic sovereignty,” the statement from NORAD added.
