By Rubén Morales Iglesias: For all six teams who are one game behind to be up to date, the Premier League of Belize (PLB) has scheduled three backmatches; two for tonight in Independence and Benque Viejo del Carmen and one for Thursday in Dangriga.

Leaders Altitude are hosting the San Pedro Pirates at 7:30 pm tonight at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence. The match has been postponed twice already due to rain on Saturday, September 24, and on Wednesday, September 28. The last time, San Pedro had already started to travel to Independence and had to turn back.

“The Pirates will make their way into the House of the Lion! Don’t miss this monster match-up on Wednesday 7:30! Tix on sale at Tony’s,” said Altitude in a social media post.

Altitude, who have a four-point advantage on Verdes and San Pedro are intent on augmenting their lead, while San Pedro are trying to close the gap while getting Verdes off their backs. Both have played a game less than the champs.

In Benque Viejo del Carmen, Benque Viejo United will be hosting Progresso. The game has been scheduled for 8:00 pm at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium. Progresso’s 1-0 win over Port Layola pushed them up to fourth place on the weekend.  They know they cannot let up otherwise they’ll lose the playoff spot for which they’ve been working so hard. But Benque United are also eyeing that spot. They are four points shy of Progresso’s 15 points, but mathematically, they still stand a chance with three games remaining.

“The engines start to head west to Benque Viejo to fight for our position in their home turf,” said Progresso FC in a social media post. “The tensions are high in the PLB. It won’t be easy but we will give our all for those important 3 points! Fi the North!”

“Now more than ever we need your support to make the Marshalleck be felt like never before,” said Benque Viejo United asking for their fans’ support.

Wagiya (14) and Port Layola (10), who are playing the third backmatch on Thursday at 4:00 pm at the Carl Ramos Stadium in Dangriga, also stand a chance at making fourth place.

So, expect the remaining games in the PLB Opening Season to be highly explosive, including those tonight and tomorrow.
