Posted: Wednesday, October 19, 2022. 10:06 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children, Rossana Briceno features outstanding Belizean women making a difference in Belize every week.

This week’s feature is on Social Protection Officer, Santree Sandiford.

Sandiford is a driven, determined, and outgoing young professional, whose belief that “to be of service to others is to be in service of God” has guided her both personally and professionally.

Santree has been actively involved in community development efforts since she was a teen.

She has fundraised for worthy causes, tutored less privileged children, volunteered at children’s homes and homes for the elderly, and has participated in and led youth groups. Her contribution has benefitted children, the environment, and families.

As a professional, this “service to others” has been reflected in her career choices.

Santree notes that the highlight of her career has been her roles as the Program Coordinator at the Love Foundation and in the Office of the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children. In the former, she directly engaged with the social and economic development of at-risk youths and young men in conflict with the law.

In the latter, she was responsible for the planning and implementation of the Office’s goals and priorities around gender-based violence and gender equality.

Santree has initiated and delivered sustained results, and effective change in the financial, academic, and non-profit sectors, where her strength lies in research, communication for change management, policy development, and project implementation.

Currently, Santree is a Social Protection Officer in the Ministry of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous People’s Affairs, where she is a part of a dynamic and talented team that seeks to strengthen policies and programs to assist and protect all Belizeans, particularly those considered vulnerable.

Santree holds a Master of Arts in International Development from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, where she studied using social capital of vulnerable populations as a poverty reduction strategy.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in International Relations and Social Policy from the University of the West Indies in Jamaica.
