By Aaron Humes, Orange Walk Town: Farmers of sugar cane are used to paying expenses for cutting, collecting, and transporting cane to Tower Hill.
But they get back only a fraction of their result after BSI/ASR removes overhead expenses – and each year those expenses appear to increase.
The situation has reached a crisis point and it is not accurate to estimate the figure, as BSI has, at $20 million annually in the transfer of value when farmers don’t even know what BSI is spending on production.
The negotiation on this point can go by one of two routes: a simpler 60-40 split before expenses (i.e., on the gross revenue from sales), or a justification of the expenses with a view to reducing them and ascribing them to those who are actually spending for the service.
