By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) Chief Executive Officer Servulo Baeza and Acting Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Victoriano Pascual are attending a two-day policymakers workshop in St. Lucia.
“The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) is sponsoring and organizing the workshop, which is aimed at policymakers from throughout the region,” said MAFSE.
The workshop is being conducted under the CARICOM AgREADY project funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) which IICA is currently implementing. This project, according to MAFSE, aims to strengthen the foundation for a climate-responsive agricultural sector in the Caribbean.
The workshop is geared at sharing the key results from the CARICOM AgReady Project with decision makers to build awareness and promote the use of innovative tools to help with climate action in the agriculture sector. It also seeks to provide a space for discussion on regional priorities and synergies for facilitating climate action in the region’s agriculture sector that can guide future actions and develop larger GCF projects.
“The AgREADY project seeks to raise the profile of the agricultural sector in GCF’s climate financing prioritization processes by implementing an evidence-based and inter-sectoral strategy for developing and rebranding Caribbean agriculture as ‘low-emissions’, to enhance market opportunities and attract private sector investments,” said MAFSE.
The two-day workshop is expected to review key findings from each study, look at what implications these results will have on the region. It will also consider the importance of activities and tools the project has helped to develop or apply, and how those tools can help in decision-making.
