By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) held a training session on making bokashi composting in San Roman Rio Hondo in the Orange Walk District on Wednesday.
“Resilient Rural Belize (RRB) in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) Extension Officers Federico Chi and Vicente Tuyub, along with Department of Co-operatives staff member Francis Vega facilitated the training for Backyard Garden (BYG) Beneficiaries,” said MAFSE.
“The topic of the training was ‘Making of Bokashi’ as an alternative source of fertilizer to be used in the production of vegetables in backyard garden plots. A total of 23 BYG beneficiary households participated in this activity.”
MAFSE said the training is part of Resilient Rural Belize’s commitment to ensure that Backyard Garden beneficiaries learn and can produce their own organic vegetables and poultry. This training has the long-term objective of enhancing food security in the rural communities, plus providing a means of generating additional income for the BYG beneficiary households by marketing all surplus produce from their backyard gardens.
“Backyard garden beneficiaries will receive further training in the formulation of bio-inputs with the purpose of reducing regular pesticide use and promoting the production of healthier organic vegetables,” said MAFSE.
