By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) is today celebrating World Food Day at the Agriculture and Natural Resources Institute (ANRI) in Hope Creek, Stann Creek District.

The World Food Day Fair was to have been observed on Friday, October 14 but due to bad weather, MAFSE postponed the activities to Friday, October 21.

“World Food Day is observed annually on 16 October to highlight the millions of people worldwide who cannot afford a healthy diet and the need for regular access to nutritious food,” said the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

This year the day has been observed with the theme ‘Leave NO ONE behind’.

“World Food Day is a globally celebrated activity organized by the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization,” said Luis Pook, MAFSE Communications Director.

“Belize is only one of the countries celebrating World Food Day,” he added.

“It’s a global celebration of food and the focus is trying to make food systems not just resilient but to also conform with the environment. That is, to make sure that whatever it is that we do in agriculture conforms with the environment so that we don’t upset the environment. So, it’s a matter of balancing between using the earth and not abusing the earth.”

Pook said many organizations, not necessarily connected to the Ministry of Agriculture, have set up agricultural, industrial, and educational booths at ANRI for World Food Day.

“Food is not just in the realm of agriculture; it’s also something important to other sectors as well, like the education sector,” Pook said.

“The Ministry of Agriculture promotes and helps to organize World Food Day but it is an inter-ministerial and inter-sectoral kind of celebration. The Ministry of Education is also involved along with several other organizations connected to us like the Belize Marketing Development Corporation and CARDI. But there are also other organizations that will be participating as well.”

The main address at the opening ceremony will be delivered by MAFSE Minister Jose Abelardo Mai.

Dr Louis Zabaneh, Minister of State for Education, Culture, Science and Technology, is giving the welcome remarks and Emilio Rene Montero, National Food and Nutrition Security Commission (NFNSC) coordinator, will give the Vote of Thanks.

ANRI is located on Canada Hill Road in Hope Creek in the Stann Creek District. Activities will run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
