United Democratic Party members trigger recall process against Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow

Posted: Friday, October 21, 2022. 9:12 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: This afternoon, a petition containing 201 signatures of delegates of the United Democratic Party (UDP) was delivered to party headquarters and Secretary-General Juliet Thimbriel, acting for party chairman Michael Peyrefitte.

The persons delivering them were vice-chairman Alberto August, former communications spokesman Delroy Cuthkelvin and Roosevelt Blades, and their action triggered another chapter in the long-running saga over the party’s leadership dating back to February of 2020.

But to hear August tell it, this was just making it official and aligned with section seven of the party’s constitution, which demands that a third of official delegates sign on to a process of recall of the party leader, which will now be verified.

“We are not here to badmouth anybody in our party. It’s just that we need to move on, and we understand that while we have collected 201 signatures, we are hoping that it will proceed in terms of the recall,” August said, adding that Peyrefitte’s absence would not stop the process and Thimbriel is qualified to receive them.

Once the signatures are verified, August says, the real work begins to secure two-thirds of the delegate list: “We are going to go to the delegates and we are going to meet them in private and campaign with them. We are hoping that the campaign – when this recall is triggered – we are hoping that nothing gets nasty, man; the UDP has gone through enough.”

Along that line, August would not get into detail as to what led to this pass, sticking with the theme of unity and not badmouthing anyone and saying that the party’s business “is internal – it’s time for that to end.” Likewise, he refused to discuss a reported video where a delegate claims he was “duped” into signing the video.

He avoided the question of who is backing the petition, particularly parliamentarians Patrick Faber and Tracey Taegar-Panton, and allowed that while the collection “didn’t take long,” he would not get into the details.

August closed once again with the theme of unity: “Whatever happened in there was peaceful and there was no kind of animosity. We are a UDP family, we are tired of this mess, we are uniting our party and moving on,” adding that he counts on his boss to be fair as he always has with these processes: “The focus is to unite our party; that is the primary and only focus, to unite our party and make it viable to contest the next general elections in this country.”
