International News: U.S.-Mexico border migrant encounters surpass record 227,000 in September

Posted: Saturday, October 22, 2022. 9:34 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) indicate that for the month of September 2022, there was a record number of migrant encounters along the U.S.-Mexico border.

More than 227,000 migrant encounters were recorded, making it the highest number during the month of September in Department of Homeland Security history, Fox News reports.

The numbers also show a significant increase from September in recent years.

In September 2021, there were 192,001 migrant encounters.

CBP Commissioner, Chris Magnus says that “failing regimes” in Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua continued to drive a new wave of migration across the western Hemisphere.

“The number of Venezuelans arriving at the southern border decreased sharply nearly every day since we launched additional joint actions with Mexico to reduce irregular migration and create a more fair, orderly and safe process for people fleeing the humanitarian and economic crisis in their country,” Magnus added.

In addition, the statistics show that there were 20 known or suspected terrorists arrested at the southern border in September.
