5K polio awareness walk/run held in Belmopan today

Posted: Sunday, October 23, 2022. 4:20 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Today, over 40 runners gathered in Belmopan City, to participate in the 5K End Polio Walk/Run.

The event, hosted by the Rotaract Club of Belmopan, started at 6:00 a.m. at the Sir George Brown Field.

Runners traveled from the corner of Libertad Ave and South Ring Road, around the ring road, up Forest Drive to the Quality Poultry roundabout, and went back to the starting point on the Ring Road.

The event joins in the global call to end polio, a viral disease that is both disabling and deadly. The polio virus can infect the spinal cord, causing paralysis to the victim, and is also highly contagious, and can have lasting effects or leave deformities in those that contract it.

While there has not been any cases of polio reported in Belize since 1981, the Rotaract Club and participants are advocating for the day when there are no more reported polio cases worldwide.
