Leader of the Opposition Shyne Barrow chastises government over crime rate: “Get tough on crime”

Posted: Sunday, October 23, 2022. 9:41 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition, ended last week’s meeting of the House of Representatives on the adjournment on the issue of crime, and specifically, why the Government is not saying more about it.

Paying tribute to the late Police Constable Lorray Arzu, retired police officer Norris Flowers, Jeffrey Coats of San Ignacio, and other murder victims, Barrow said that “we can’t expect that a problem that has persisted for 41 years – and even before that, from when George Price was there – to be solved in one term, or in one year. You are failing, and that is okay, but let us accept that, let us step out there and reassure the public that we understand this thing is getting out of control, and here’s what we’re going to do – we don’t see that. We don’t see any answers or any solutions.”

The silence of the “liberal, leftist” Government “is deafening”, Barrow added, and what it says is not good for Belize: “I don’t know if you take these things lightly, but it’s not good for tourism, it’s not good for economic development, for investor confidence, it’s not good for our citizenry. #planbelize promised citizen security as a priority, a gender item. And we are not seeing that and it gives me no pleasure to point this out. I wish that you could resolve this and what I’m asking for in the first instance, is to get up and call a press conference and face the nation and accept that we have a problem. This liberal approach, this leftist approach that ‘okay, yes, there [are] social issues, there is poverty,’ we understand that but there must be justice…People are killing with impunity. Murderers are acting as if they don’t respect the authority.”

Barrow also went after Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, saying that he had played “supercop” in his rise in the Police Department, but now appears to be clueless. He pointed out that the incident for which he served nearly ten years in prison was something he had to “pay for” in order to turn his life around, but so many are not paying the same price.”
