By Benjamin Flowers: A total of 15 people have graduated from a training course held by the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) as certified Community Health Workers (CHW)s.
The CHWs were honored at a ceremony held on the Central Health Region compound in Belize City on Friday, October 21.
According to the MOHW, CHWs are lay members of the community who serve as volunteers. They are selected by community members to provide basic health promotion and basic medical care for a number of common health problems. The Ministry said that there are currently 209 active CHWs working in urban and rural communities.
At the certification ceremony, Director of Health Services Dr, Melissa Diaz, explained that CHWs help to fill a gap within the primary care system, as 45 percent of people in the country of Belize live in rural areas and may not readily have access to primary health care.
“The agents of social change within the primary healthcare continuum are the community health workers,” Dr. Diaz said.
The CHW programme has existed since 1983.
