Verdes were founded in Benque Viejo del Carmen in 1976 and Wagiya followed suit in Dangriga in 1983. Both have survived while great teams like Belize City’s Milpros, Orange Walk’s Juventus, and Corozal’s Victoria, to name a few, floundered.
Today, National Champions Verdes are trying to regain the second position they lost on Saturday when the San Pedro Pirates drew 0-0 with Benque Viejo United. Wagiya, for their part, are trying to regain the fourth spot they relinquished to Progresso. At 14 points, a win today coupled with a loss by Progresso to leaders Altitude would push them back up into a playoff position.
The match at the FFB Stadium in Belmopan kicks off at 4:00 pm.
Elsewhere, the Progresso-Altitude match starts at 3:30 pm at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk. While Altitude are out to cement their leading position, Progresso need to win to ensure they maintain the fourth spot which gives them a ticket to the playoffs. A win today would strengthen their hold on the fourth berth. They now threat Wagiya, who are playing Verdes today, pose considering the Culture Capital club have a backmatch next Wednesday against Port Layola.
And talking about Port Layola, though they only have ten points, mathematically, they still stand a chance of making the playoffs. So, expect them to come out pumping at the MCC Grounds in Belize City at 4:00 pm today against the Belmopan Bandits, who after beating Benque Viejo United last week, are out for a second win.
All in all, these last regular season games are all hot contests any football losing fan cannot afford to miss.
