By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize close their participation at the XIX Under-21 Central American Men’s Volleyball Championship against Nicaragua on Monday evening.
After winning only one in five games, the Under-21 Belize Men’s National Team is going to attempt closing with a win over the hosts, but that’s going be easier said than done as the Nicaraguans are in second position and sport a 4-1 record.
Even though Guatemala, who rest today, already claimed the title with their undefeated 6-0 record, Nicaragua want to finish off with a 5-1 record. Supported by their boisterous fans, beating them will be a difficult proposition, but not one Eleazar Mejia, Preston Smith, and company won’t be attempting to achieve.
The match starts at 6:00 pm.
Belize recorded their only win at the Alexis Argüello Polideportivo in Managua on Saturday against Honduras. Belize triumphed 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-17).
Mejia earned 21 points while Smith added nine points. Hakan Godoy and Ryan Usher added six points each.
Belize holds the sixth position with 1 win and four losses totalling six points leaving Honduras in last place with 1 point from five consecutive losses.
In the other games today, Costa Rica (2-3) play El Salvador (2-3) while Honduras meet Panama (3-2).
The regional championship is organized under the banner of the Central American Volleyball Federations Association (AFECAVOL).
