By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Today we celebrate United Nations Day under the theme: Building Back Together for Peace and Prosperity,” said the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
“It’s a day the global community set aside to mark the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.”
UNICEF, which is an agency of the United Nations responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide, said it has been working in Belize since 1954 but it wasn’t until Belize gained independence that it opened an official office in 1981.
The United Nations organization is active all over the world. Here in Belize, they are represented by the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) comprising PAHO/WHO, UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF.
The UNCT said it works to support the Government of Belize, civil society, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector so it can achieve sustainable and inclusive human development.
“The UNCT is committed to supporting Belize to achieve its national development priorities, and international development commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and realize the values, principles and core of all United Nations human rights treaties,” said the UNCT.
