Tracy Panton challenges Party Leader’s stance on recall petition; “No one was forced”

By Benjamin Flowers: United Democratic Party (UDP) Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow had some strong words today regarding the petition made to recall him as leader; words that Tracy Taegar Panton decided to openly challenge.

Barrow issued a statement this morning saying, among other things, “All Delegates who were pressured, defrauded, misled and lied to have a right to withdraw their signature from the recall petition.”

Panton followed up with a social media post of her own this evening, dismissing the allegations, and stressing that the 201 delegates that signed the petition, to the best of her knowledge, did so of their own free will.

“Let me state categorically for those of you who have been seeking clarification; to the best of my knowledge, no one was: Pressured; Defrauded; Misled; Coerced; Bribed; Lied To, to sign the current recall petition,” Panton said. “In my opinion such claims are completely and wholly untrue.”

She went on to say that the recall mechanism is a legitimate, legal, constitutional process that is made available to delegates of the party via its constitution to use as they see fit. She stressed that the mechanism is but a single element in the party’s democratic processes that help to distinguish the party as a viable political institution.

Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte said that vetting for the signatures on the recall petition will begin on Tuesday, October 25.
